What Shattered Pixel Dungeon actually is
Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a traditional roguelike: you descend a dungeon, you die, you start again with what you learned. It began as a fork of Pixel Dungeon and has been developed far past it, to the point where it is now one of the most polished roguelikes on any platform.
It is free with no adverts, no in-app purchases and no energy system. That is unusual enough in mobile gaming to be worth saying twice. A run takes roughly half an hour to an hour, it saves anywhere, and it works entirely offline — which makes it close to ideal for a commute.
It is also genuinely hard, and it does not apologise for it. You will lose most runs for a long while, and death is permanent. If you want a game that lets you win, this is the wrong one. If you want a game with real depth that fits in 28 MB and runs on a 1 GB phone, it is hard to beat.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is licensed under the GPL-3.0, which explicitly permits redistribution. That licence is the written permission that lets us host the file at all.

Is it really free? Where is the catch?
There is no catch. No adverts, no in-app purchases, no energy timers, no paid unlocks. The developer funds it through voluntary donations.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. The game runs entirely offline. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no account.
Is it too hard for a beginner?
It is hard, and it is meant to be. Expect to lose many runs before your first win. The game gives you tools to learn rather than difficulty settings to lower.
How is this different from Pixel Dungeon?
It began as a fork of Pixel Dungeon and has since been rebalanced and expanded extensively, with new classes, items and mechanics. It is far more developed than the original, which is no longer actively maintained.
